Freie Universität Berlin applauds the commitment and dedication of members of the university community who are getting involved to support refugees in a variety of ways.
To help prospective students from refugee backgrounds get started in everyday life at the university, Freie Universität Berlin has launched a buddy program. The program gives students and employees of Freie Universität various ways to help, whether as conversation partners for those learning German, by explaining how the study programs in a certain subject are structured, or by giving a guided tour of the campus and university institutions, such as the libraries.
Teaching language skills presents one of the most pressing challenges in terms of integration. Freie Universität offers one-day preparatory classes in German as a foreign language for all members of the university community who are interested in attending and wish to teach German to refugees on a volunteer basis.
Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs who are involved in volunteer activities and wish to complete internships in areas of organized refugee aid have the chance to earn academic credit for these activities in the general career preparation (Allgemeine Berufsvorbereitung, ABV) area of their programs from this winter semester onward, provided that certain conditions are met.
