Representatives of German and Russian Universities met in St. Petersburg to discuss campus projects on sustainable development

News from Apr 24, 2017

Every year German representatives are invited to Russia in the framework of the “German Week” to develop multilateral ties between both countries. This year the week was held under the motto “Gateways to the World”. Supporting this, representatives from Freie Universität Berlin, University of Hamburg and ITMO University of St. Petersburg met at an international conference on “Sustainable Development of Universities, Business and Cities in Russia and Germany”. The participants discussed the concept of “Green Universities” and shared experiences on sustainable campus projects and stakeholder and student engagement.

Andreas Wanke, Head of the Sustainability and Energy Management Unit (FUB) and Katrin Risch, program manager of the University Alliance for Sustainability (FUB) gave insights to various successful projects of FUB for promoting sustainability. Inter alia, FUB’s energy conservation system, a concept on public lectures on ecology and the student engaging initiative “SUSTAIN IT” were introduced.

A second conference day focusing on the experiences from universities and businesses with sustainability management was organized by the German Academic Exchange Service. In this framework the FUB representatives introduced the international project “University Alliance to Sustainability” and the participatory sustainability management strategy at FU Berlin.
