Freie Universität is ranked nationally and internationally among the top research universities in Germany. In 2007, after an intense, nation-wide competition, Freie Universität became one of nine German universities to be awarded an Elite status by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In the Excellence Initiative competition, the Freie Universität was selected for its outstanding doctoral programs and research clusters and received additional funding for the promotion of young researchers from Germany and abroad.
Internationality is not just a slogan at Freie Universität, but reality – due to it’s high percentage of international doctoral researchers and it’s substantial support of research stays abroad.
Academic life at Freie Universität has been marked by internationalism from the start. You as a young researcher will benefit from the international network at Freie Universität. As an "International Network University", Freie Universität Berlin not only maintains liaison offices throughout the world, opening diverse opportunities for researchers but also maintains relations with many international partners which further both collaborations between individual researchers and official partnerships with a variety of renowned universities around the world - from Tokyo to Stanford, from Cambridge to Sydney.
As a full-range university with more than 160 subjects Freie Universitätit offers a wide variety of study programs. Here you can devote yourself to the culture of Latin America or study the structure of individual cells, Law or Economics, or choose between Psychology and Journalism. One unique feature is the large number of so-called “small subjects” such as Byzantine Studies and Jewish Studies. A variety of collaborations and projects within the university as well as with outside partner institutions contribute to interdisciplinary exchange and will further your research.
