For doctoral candidates in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The goal of this course will be to expand your repertoire of academic language and to improve your style in written and spoken English. The general focus will be on key vocabulary and word combinations used in academic discourse. The areas covered will include the following: giving presentations in formal and informal contexts; writing letters of application and CVs; comparing and contrasting; discussing trends and developments, cause and effect.
Participants will be expected to give at least one presentation in the course of the semester, and there will be regular in-class writing practice as well. If you are currently preparing an English-language text for publication, you are welcome to submit it for review and commentary. General feedback will be provided following each lesson.
