For doctoral candidates of the Natural and Life Sciences
To help the students develop a good sense of judgment about conducting their scientific work, with both high professional and ethical standards.
The first part will involve instruction on matters of procedure in doing and recording scientific work, to ensure that the work is reliable.
The second part will deal with all sorts of situations that raise ethical issues in the doing and publication of scientific work.
There will be two short lectures, with Power Point presentations and some assigned reading (before the workshop starts and during it), but the main mode of teaching will involve discussion of issues, both between pairs of students and by the group as a whole.
The preparation will involve reading one assigned article in advance and bringing two problems or situations to discuss, one bearing on scientific procedure, the other on ethics.
