At the initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi, then the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology), the first High-Tech Gründerfonds organization was launched in 2005, with 272 million euros in capital. The second such fund, Gründerfonds II, was initiated in October 2011, with additional investors from the business sector. This fund’s volume is 301.5 million euros, for a total of about 573.5 million euros available. The investors in the public-private partnership are the BMWi itself, KfW, and 17 firms: ALTANA, BASF, B. Braun, Robert Bosch, CEWE Color, Daimler, Deutsche Post DHL, Deutsche Telekom, Evonik, Lanxess, media + more venture Beteiligungs GmbH & Co. KG, METRO, Qiagen, RWE Innogy, SAP, Tengelmann, and Carl Zeiss. The fund provides financing to young technology companies on attractive terms and conditions by providing venture capital and active support to the management team with a strong network and entrepreneurial know-how. Together with their partners, the fund managers set clear trends in early-stage financing. Requirements for the fund’s involvement include an innovative technological basis and a market situation that offers bright prospects.
Eleven startups supported by Profund Innovation have received financing from High-Tech Gründerfonds so far. Profund Innovation has been accredited by High-Tech Gründerfonds since March 2012.
