To help postdocs get their bearings during the difficult, but exciting, phase following earning a doctorate, Freie Universität Berlin has joined with other institutions to offer this group a variety of ways to find advice and support.
A postdoc’s rights and obligations are based on the generally applicable principles of labor and employment law, the pertinent collective agreement (Tarifvertrag) (TV-L FU), the provisions of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (Fixed-Term Research Contracts Act) and the Higher Education Act (Hochschulgesetz) for the state of Berlin, and, where applicable, the allocation guidelines. The Personnel division publishes these types of information, including process information, in circulars (Rundschreiben) or staff bulletins (Personalblätter).
The web site of the Welcome Center at Dahlem Research School offers international scholars and scientists who wish to work at Freie Universität extensive practical and organizational information to ensure that their stays in Berlin are successful.
The Family Support Center is the point of contact for advice and information on all aspects of balancing work and family life at the university.
Partners of professors awaiting appointment who have the same or similar qualifications as the appointment candidates themselves, specialists, and executives in the academic sector can receive support from the Berlin Dual Career Network. This organization aims to ensure that neither partner has to give up his or her own career for the sake of the other’s career.
The team at the research division provides assistance with issues of funding for research and graduate support and dispenses advice on support programs and current calls for applicants as well as assisting with reviewing project outlines and full applications to ensure that they meet formal and structural requirements and reflect the required content.
Various bodies and organizations at Freie Universität, offer a broad spectrum of continuing and professional education courses for participants to advance their skills and qualifications.
