Freie Universität supports its faculty and staff, and particularly junior scholars and scientists, in achieving balance between work and family life. The Dual Career & Family Service organizes regular seminars and continuing education sessions on various topics relating to family life, work, everyday life, and work-life balance.

The Dual Career & Family Service also provides assistance with arranging child care for conferences and meetings and with finding schools, childcare placements, day care options for vacation periods, and babysitters.

Student Union (Studentenwerk) Day Care Center (Kindertagesstätte)

The day care center (Kindertagesstätte) operated by the student union (Studentenwerk) at Freie Universität offers full-day care from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The day care center – which has been managed by the student union since January 1, 2005 – has 136 infant, preschool, and school-age placements for children ranging in age from two months to about ten years. All members of Freie Universität are eligible to enroll their children at the center from the time they are just a few months old until school age.

Tours of the day care center, consultations and meetings with the management during office hours, and observation visits during operating hours are permitted by appointment.

Emergency Child Care

To cover for unforeseen childcare needs, Freie Universität has contracted with a family service institution to provide emergency child care for the university’s faculty and staff. To prevent absences from work, employees are eligible to utilize this childcare option flexibly and at no charge.
