Freie Universität supports its faculty and staff, and particularly junior scholars and scientists, in achieving balance between work and family life. The Dual Career & Family Service organizes regular seminars and continuing education sessions on various topics relating to family life, work, everyday life, and work-life balance.
The Dual Career & Family Service also provides assistance with arranging child care for conferences and meetings and with finding schools, childcare placements, day care options for vacation periods, and babysitters.
Freie Universität Berlin is committed to ensuring better work-life balance for those affiliated with the university. The Dual Career & Family Service provides information on issues surrounding maternity leave (Mutterschutz), parental benefits (Elterngeld), and parental leave (Elternzeit), with consideration for the different legal bases of different groups’ employment with the university. Students with children can also turn to the center for help with organizational and legal matters.
For parents to get a slot at a nursery school or day care center, the state of Berlin issues day care vouchers (Kita-Gutscheine). The vouchers for a specific amount of care themselves can be redeemed at any of the approximately 1,800 facilities financed by the state of Berlin. Freie Universität operates a childcare center with 200 available slots for children of faculty and staff members and students. The university also offers its faculty and employees a service that provides child care in emergencies and other unforeseen situations.
The Dual Career & Family Service provides advice and information to those who need to care for a family member and, where needed and requested, works closely with other bodies and organizations within and outside of Freie Universität to find solutions that permit employees and faculty members to balance work and caring for family members.
