The Open Access Publication Fund was established in 2012 with funding by the German Research Fundation (DFG) and by Freie Universität. The Open Access Publication Fund's purpose is to cover charges for articles published by Freie Universität Berlin members in open-access journals, provided they fulfill the requirements for payment set forth by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The Fund is administered by the University Library.
All articles funded to date are deposited in the University's institutional repository and can be viewed here:
In February 2013, Freie Universität's Executive Board decided that the University will continue to support its members through the publication fund when the German Research Foundation (DFG) cancels the program in 2020.
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has set the following conditions for the funding of publication fees:
1. The article must be published in a "genuine" open-access journal. The open-access journal in which the article is published must have quality-assurance procedures ("peer review") in place. All articles in those journals must be openly accessible free of charge immediately and completely as soon as they are published.
2. Publication fees may be paid from funds made available by the DFG only if they do not exceed €2,000 per article (19% VAT included).
3. Funding will be provided only if a Freie Universität member is responsible for the settlement of the publication fee as "submitting" or "corresponding" author.
5. No reimbursement will be made for publication fees that have been settled using external funding.
Please check whether the open-access journal to which you submit your article fulfills the conditions for funding. If your publication meets the criteria, there are two possible procedures, depending on the situation:

In March 2017, Freie Universität Berlin concluded agreements with renowned Open Access publishers. The memberships contribute substantially to making the Open Access publishing less bureaucratic. Open Access should form an integral publication mode. Members of Freie Universität submit their articles as corresponding or submitting author as usual and they do not have to take care of paying the publication fees.
The published articles will be indexed by the scientific citation service Web of Science.
In addition, all publications will also be deposited in the institutional repository.
