"Avoidance, is better than recycling, is better than disposal"– this is a classic principle of waste management and the Freie Universität Berlin has been committed to this for a number of years. In order to implement this strategy in such a large institution, it is necessary to clearly identify responsibility and accountability for proper waste collection, separation and disposal.
This is done by developing waste-specific definitions in the environmental management system. These ensure that the demand for a sustainable waste industry, and therefore, an equally ecological and economical development of the numerous waste disposal processes is met. Waste management serves the Freie Universität in the following ways:
The necessary infrastructure and the university-wide service are developed by the waste management officer and their team. The annual waste report contains fundamental information about waste generation, disposal costs, and implemented and planned measures for optimising disposal.
