Dr Hoffmann from the research center ‘Degenerate Art’ at the Institute for Art History at Freie Universität and Sergej Fofanov, doctoral candidate at the Department of History and Cultural Studies, will be doing research this week in various archives in Moscow. Their interest is focused in particular on Rolf Hetsch, lawyer and art historian, who served as a consultant for the special department of ‘Degenerate Art’ of the "Reich Culture Chamber for Visual Arts" and was responsible for inventory of confiscated art objects. The research results will be used in a publication of the research center and a symposium scheduled for 2013.
The main project of the research center is the inventory of art objects that were confiscated by Nazis in 1937 from German museums for being ‘degenerate’, including details on their confiscation and sale or destruction. The first results were already published by the research center and the list of confiscated objects is also publicly available online and is constantly extended.
