The alumni network of the Center for Gloabl Politics (CGP) of Freie Universität Berlin includes more than 500 former students around the world. Once a year, the CGP invites the regional alumni coordinators to participate in a workshop sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service. The workshops take place alternately in Europe and in Asia. In September 20 alumni regional coordinators from 9 different countries met near St. Petersburg.
In addition to the further development of the alumni network, the workshop focused on the modernization processes in the host country. Dr. Reinhard Krumm (Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Moscow office) held a talk on "The Medvedev-factor," which significantly influences the discourse on modernization. Taking a critical view, Prof. Vladimir Gel'man (European University, St. Petersburg) discussed controversies and dead ends in the politics of modernization in contemporary Russia. The expert on Russian foreign policy, Prof. Khudoley (St. Petersburg State University) gave insights on the influence of modernization discourses on the international level as well as in Russia’s diplomatic relations.
