The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation once again recognized Freie Universität Berlin's efforts in dealing with its international research alumni. The foundation praised the university's adroit incentive system, which is aimed at integrating its research alumni in the existing activities and structures of the university.
The concept developed by Freie Universität is successful in keeping researchers from abroad in contact with the university; it is very academically oriented, very stringent, and well thought out.
Overall, 16 universities in Germany received similar awards from the Humboldt Foundation. In addition, three non-university research institutions won recognition for their efforts with research alumni. It was the first time the competition was open to independent research institutions. Speakers for the institution said that no further competions of this nature are being planned. The Research Alumni Strategies competition is part of the International Research Marketing project, a joint initiative by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service, the German Research Foundation (DFG), and the Fraunhofer Society. The initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
