The Canadian political scientist Prof. Dr. Verónica Schild is the first international visiting professor of gender studies ("Dahlem International Network Professorship for Gender Studies") at Freie Universität Berlin. Verónica Schild teaches and conducts research at Western University London, Ontario.
An expert on Latin America, Shield’s main fields of research include democratization processes, contemporary political theory, and theory of the state, all with a particular focus on gender aspects. The Dahlem International Network Professorship for Gender Studies was established as part of the implementation of Freie Universität Berlin’s development strategy. Applications are invited annually.
Verónica Schild is one of the leading experts in the field of comparative research on Latin America. Due to her contributions to feminist research on globalization, she is an important cooperation partner for those involved in the internationally oriented research projects at Freie Universität that deal with gender research and gender equality.
In addition to her inaugural lecture, Verónica Schild will be holding a colloquium for doctoral students as well as teaching a block seminar dealing with the topic of her current research project, “Latin American Feminism and the Configuration of the State.”
Gender equality and the promotion of gender research have been firmly ankered among Freie Universität’s main goals for more than three decades. They therefore played a key role in the university’s development strategy, which was selected in 2012 for the second time in the German Excellence Initiative. The newly established Dahlem International Network Professorship for Gender Studies visiting professorship will be advertised annually and will be awarded to an outstanding researcher in the field.
