The Graduate School Materials Science for Solar Energy Solutions/ MatSEC@DRS funded by Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin focuses on kesterite materials. These quaternary compound semiconductors on the basis of copper, tin, zinc, sulfur and/or selenium are very promising candidates for an absorber material in thin film solar cells as well as for photoelectrodes for H2 evolution from water under solar light. Their material properties are very similar to that of chalcopyrites. But in contrast they are made from non-toxic, earth-abundant and low-cost raw materials.
