Different types of structured doctoral degree programs are integrated in Dahlem Research School, depending on the institution and the funding source.

Research Training Groups are university training programs established for a specific time period to support young researchers in their pursuit of a doctorate. The Research Training Groups provide doctoral researchers with the opportunity to work within a coordinated and interdisciplinary research program focusing on a specific research topic. Doctoral candidates are admitted on a regular basis depending on the research program.

Graduate Schools, another type of structured doctoral program, are mainly funded by the German Excellence Initiative. They offer a unique, inspirational, and productive environment for graduate studies to outstanding doctoral candidates. While these schools typically encompass several disciplines rather than focusing on a single subject area, the graduate schools in Germany are generally much smaller than their American counterparts.

One especially prestigious model of structured doctoral education is offered at International Max Planck Research Schools, which were established by the Max Planck Society in collaboration with universities. Max Planck Institutes provide a unique concentration of interdisciplinary education and scientific excellence to highly talented doctoral candidates, especially from abroad.

Dahlem Research School offers the following doctoral programs within three schools:
