Focus Areas

The Focus Areas form academic and scientific networks and working platforms for interdisciplinary collaborative research at Freie Universität. They are the basis for the university’s Cluster development.

The life cycles of the Focus Areas tend to be long-term, depending on the topics and issues on which these clusters are working, the development of resources and skills, and the needs of the broader society.

Five interdepartmental Focus Areas have already been identified and established with conceptual and financial support from the CCD:

• CAS – Center for Area Studies

• DCPS – Dahlem Center of Plant Sciences

• DHC – Dahlem Humanities Center

• NanoScale – Functional Materials at the Nanoscale

• MILIEU – Centre for Urban Earth System Studies
