Freie Universität Berlin is one of eleven German Universities of Excellence. The university first won this title in 2007 in the German government’s first Excellence competition to promote research at German universities. This status was re-confirmed in June 2012, when the university won special funding for its future development strategy, “Veritas- Justitia - Libertas. International Network University.”
Freie Universität has also submitted proposals in the Excellence Strategy, the German government’s successor to the Excellence Initiative. In a preliminary decision five proposal outlines for new Excellence Clusters were approved for submission of full proposals. All the Cluster initiatives are based on structures that were already successfully established within the Excellence Initiative. In the Excellence Strategy Freie Universität will be working more closely with Humboldt-Universität and Technische Universität as well as with Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in the Berlin University Alliance.
