The apartments utilized by the FU-BEST program are located in the northwest of Berlin, within easy walking distance of several bus and subway stops. While ample shopping opportunities, supermarkets, and dining options are available in the immediate vicinity, the city center can easily be reached in 20 minutes. The commute to campus takes approximately 50 minutes by public transportation. This is not at all unusual, since German (and more generally, European) universities tend to be commuter-student institutions. The apartments are fully furnished, single-occupancy studio apartments, each one with one living room/bedroom, a bathroom and a kitchenette. Pillows, blankets, and sheets are provided for the dual-use couch-beds; participants must bring their own towels, an alarm-clock, and other personal items. There is an on-site laundry room with washers and dryers; tokens can be purchased on the spot. The apartments feature an internet connection via Ethernet cable, and WiFi access is provided in the common areas on the ground floor. There is no telephone connection available, but most participants buy a cell phone at one of the nearby shops once they are in Berlin. Participants opting for apartment housing are required to submit credit card information as security deposit.
