Uwe Birkel holds a degree in political science, linguistics, and literary studies. He founded the Berlin Network for Sustainability and two Startups, the first one in the field of learning, motivation, and self-management and the second one (as co-founder) in the field of impact and financing strategies for globally oriented sustainability projects.
As lecturer and representative of the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD in Madagascar, he supported the University of Antananarivo and ISCAM School of Management and Marketing, among others, in projects concerning Education for Sustainable Development, utilizing continuing education, advanced training, and conferences.
He contributed to several international conferences, for example regarding the combination of employability and Education for Sustainable Development and created three handbooks for higher education teachers. A fourth handbook, about African and German Sustainable Entrepreneurship, will be published in 2017.
Currently, Uwe Birkel works as lecturer, trainer, and consultant in the field of communication and management for several universities and organizations, focused on Social and Sustainable Entrepreneurship and business development using creative working techniques. He is also an associate at the Institut for Social Innovation at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in the field of Entrepreneurship Education for Empowerment in Developing Countries.
