Markus Bodler was born in southern Bavaria and studied political science and history at the universities of Bamberg and Bonn, with a year-long stay in both Aix-en-Provence at the Institut d’Études Politiques and in London at the Royal Institute of International Affairs.
Being a Francophile at heart, he specialized in the history of contemporary France, writing a Ph.D. dissertation on the French diplomatic historian Jean-Baptiste Duroselle. Research during his Ph.D. brought him not only to France and the French-speaking parts of Switzerland, but also to the U.S. Thus, he is an expert in historiography and has a solid background in international and diplomatic history, especially the rather thorny issue of Franco-German relations. He last held a teaching position at the University of Potsdam.
