At Freie Universität, one local women’s representative or gender equality officer and one substitute are elected to serve in each of the departments, central institutes, and central services, and at the library, the botanic garden, and the central university administration. There is a full-time women’s representative at Charité – University Medicine Berlin, and there is a local women’s representative at each clinic campus, each of them with her own substitute.
The local women’s representatives and gender equality offers are exempted from performing up to 50% of their job-related duties (in medicine, up to 100%). They work to represent the interests of women in the local setting. Their involvement in all hiring and appointment processes is required, and they promote research into women’s studies and gender studies within the individual disciplines while also serving as counselors (in matters such as sexual harassment, discrimination, and stalking).
