The nursery school (Kindertagesstätte) operated by the student union (Studentenwerk) is located near the university’s park-like Dahlem campus. It offers a total of 200 slots, which are generally allocated via the Berlin nursery school voucher system (Kita-Gutschein-System). A block of 18 slots is kept available for children of recipients of scholarships, grants, and fellowships as well as the children of visiting scholars and scientists who plan to work at Freie Universität for just a few months. The nursery school, which is located near the university, serves children from the age of eight weeks until school age.
Admission is only offered to children who have at least one parent affiliated with a higher education institution in Berlin. Children of those affiliated with Freie Universität Berlin are given preferential admission. Visiting scholars and scientists, along with recipients of scholarships, grants, and fellowships, at Freie Universität Berlin are able to place their children in nursery school quickly and without a lot of bureaucratic requirements because they do not need a nursery school voucher (Kita-Gutschein).

The Berlin Nursery School Voucher System (Kita-Gutschein-System)
For parents to find a slot in nursery school or a day care center, the state of Berlin issues nursery school vouchers (Kita-Gutscheine). When a family applies for a voucher, the state assesses factors such as the parents’ employment situation, commute time to the workplace, and income before determining how many hours of day care per day are needed and what the costs are to the parents. Families apply for nursery school vouchers with the Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt) in the district where they live. The vouchers themselves can be redeemed at any of the approximately 1,800 facilities financed by the state of Berlin, provided that the desired facility has slots available.
