Shaping a Higher Education Institution
The need for improved compatibility between work and family life is especially clear in higher education. What is needed in this sector is not only to design the working conditions of university employees to be systematically more family-friendly, but also to ensure that studying and family life are compatible as well.
Under the heading of “shaping a higher education institution” – and that means designing it to be family-friendly – the next few pages specify the resources and strategies used by Freie Universität Berlin to ensure better compatibility, the goals the university has set for the next few years as part of the audit familiengerechte hochschule (Family-friendly Higher Education Audit), what projects the university is using to ensure that it is among those cited for best practices (The Best Practice Club) in the “Familie in der Hochschule” (Family on Campus) competition, and what activities the Freie Universität mit Kind (Freie Universität with Children) working group has already initiated and those it has in store.
