Biomarkers as a tool for the prediction and neurobiological characterization of Post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD)

Project Summary

Post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a condition affecting patients that undergo surgery and anaesthesia. POCD after surgery may last for days up to weeks and may even persist over time. The incidence substantially increases with age. Interestingly, cognitive deficits very well comparable to POCD, also occur after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). ECT is performed under brief anaesthesia and is well established to reduce disease symptoms in major depression. The detailed etiology of POCD and other post-interventional cognitive deficits is unknown and might vary in patients of different age. A specific treatment is not available, and it thus would be of high clinical relevance to establish a method to assess the individual risk and to identify (treatable) risk factors that might also hint to neurobiological processes underlying this phenomenon. Within this funding period, we continue previous work funded by DynAge and aim to identify (neuro)-biological correlates, so-called biomarkers, as predictors of cognitive deficits after surgery and ECT in a cohort of young and elderly patients.
