Project Summary

Vascular calcification significantly contributes to cardiovascular diseases in the elderly population. Imbalance between inhibitory and inducing mediators is responsible for increased vascular calcification in these patients. However, at present our knowledge about the mediators involved in these processes is still at the beginning. Therefore, the “VasAge” project aims at elucidating the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of vascular aging. To achieve this aim, the role of yet unknown mediators will be investigated by using chronic kidney disease as human model for accelerated vascular aging. The VasAge project focuses on the isolation, identification and characterisation of yet unknown mediators of this process.
