Funding for Indo-German Partnerships

Freie Universität Berlin Increases Its Academic Cooperation with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay)

News from Aug 17, 2016

Freie Universität Berlin has been granted 400,000 euros from the Indo-German Partnership Programme of the German Academic Exchange Program (DAAD) to be used over the next four years for joint workshops, research projects, and the exchange of researchers, students, and administrative staff. "The funding will gives us an opportunity to intensify contacts, to support joint research projects, and to explore cooperation in new fields," said Dr. Stefan Diederich, the head of Freie Universität Berlin's Liaison Office in New Delhi.

The main focus of the fledgling institutional partnership with the prestigious IIT Bombay will be on the natural sciences as well as social sciences. Building on an existing, long-standing university partnership, the focus of collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi is the humanities and social sciences. Here new emphasis will be placed on collaboration in the fields of theater and cultural studies, languages and literature, area studies, and university administration.

In both projects the university aims to open up new areas for cooperation. The support under the Indo-German Partnership in Higher Education Programme offers researchers and students at Freie Universität Berlin an opportunity to work in long-term projects with Indian partners and thus contribute to increasing sustainable cooperation between Freie Universität Berlin and universities in India.

The Indo-German Partnership in Higher Education Programme was inaugurated in October 2015. Through this program, the DAAD and the Indian University Grants Commission (UGC) are supporting selected cooperation projects involving German and Indian universities through 2020.

As part of its internationalization strategy, Freie Universität Berlin maintains seven liaison offices worldwide. Established in 2008, the Liaison Office in New Delhi serves to promote scientific and academic contacts and activities in India. Through selected projects it provides funding and support for researchers in both countries.
