In July 2013, communication researchers from six Arab-speaking countries and Germany were invited by the FU Berlin Institute of Publications to a DAAD-financed workshop. As a result they founded the Arab-European Association for Media and Communication Researchers (AREACORE) at the end of this workshop. Participating in the project are the department for Communication and Media Studies of Freie Universität Berlin, with Dr. Carola Richter as program coordinator, of Bayan College in Oman, of Cairo University, Qatar University, Birzeit University in Palestine, Sanaa University in Yemen, La Manouba University in Tunisia and the American University in Beirut.
The first AREACORE project is “Communication in Transformation – Transforming Communication Studies”, which was promoted by the DAAD program “University Dialogue with the Islamic World”. The project discusses the effects of political and societal transformation and how change in the media landscape can be transferred in teaching and research.
Events in 2014 included a summer academy in Beirut and a collective online course for students from the Freie Universität Berlin and Cairo University in WS 2014/15.
