Information for Egyptians who want to do their PhD at the Freie Universität Berlin
The Freie Universität Berlin, comes in second after the Heidelberg University, to pursue doctorate studies in Germany. In the Excellence Initiative, the Freie Universität was also awarded for the outstanding doctoral and funding opportunities for young scientists from Germany and abroad.
If you are interested in pursuing your PhD at Freie Universität Berlin, you may choose between two options: the individual doctorate and the structured PhD within a doctoral degree program.
The Individual Doctorate
In the individual doctorate, candidates choose an academic advisor independently and ask him or her to supervise their dissertation. If the supervisor agrees, candidates can apply for admission to the PhD in the chosen field via the examination office of the department the discipline belongs to.
In 2014, for the first time, the Freie Universität Berlin Liaison Office in Cairo offers PhD vacancies to support Egyptian doctoral candidates in applying for a DAAD scholarship (GERLS or GERSS ). The list of the announced vacancies and the required information for application can be found here.
Structured Doctoral Programs
Parallel to the individual doctorate, the last few years have witnessed a constant increase of doctoral programs offering a structured PhD track. Structural programs help strengthen the academic and social integration of the doctorates. The Dahlem Research School acts as an overarching structure for outstanding doctoral programs. Doctoral candidates in the DRS-Membership Program benefit from additional financial support opportunities, interdisciplinary courses, as well as a systematic assistance in career planning.
Many structured programs offer their own scholarships. In addition, the programs offer places for candidates with self-funding or who apply for scholarships independently. Egyptian doctoral candidates can for instance apply for a DAAD scholarship. For more information, please feel free to contact us.
