Direct Exchange Programs

Freie Universität Berlin maintains a direct exchange program with two of the most prestigious universities in the Middle East and North Africa, the American University of Beirut (AUB) and the American University in Cairo (AUC). Both universities are part of FUB's EPINEL programme. The exchange is based on reciprocity. Each year up to four students are accepted et each of the two partner universities. Student fees at the partner universities are waived for all selected students. Additional fees for health insurance or language courses might occure. The deadline to apply for the EPINEL program is each year in January. Please refer to the website of the direct exchange program for more informations:

Wafedin Scholarship for German students

Through the Wafedin program, the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education offers the scholarship recipients Arabic language courses, auditor status at an Egyptian university as well as some financial support for their stay in Egypt. The Wafedin program is very popular among students from different fields of studies related to the Middle East in order to spend one or two semesters at an Egyptian public university. One of the most popular destinations is the Faculty of Economics and Political Sciences (FEPS) at Cairo University that offers study programs in Arabic, English and French.

DAAD scholarships

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) funds German students who decide to spend one or two semesters at a university in another country. This program for funding applies to all fields of study and all countries, with the exception of the arts. Further information can be found on the DAAD website

PROMOS – Programme for the mobility of under- and postgraduate students

PROMOS sponsors short time stays abroad (maximum duration six months) organized independently by you and adjusted to your individual academic needs. In particular, the programme aims to support projects which are not covered by other DAAD scholarships. The application process includes a quality-oriented selection-method.

PROMOS-scholarships are awarded within the following categories:

  • Funding of studies abroad worldwide
  • Funding of language classes worldwide
  • Funding of internships outside of Europe
  • Funding of summer schools and similar worldwide
  • Funding of group excursions and competition trips worldwide
