For many years the DFG has operated a successful joint funding programme with Brazilian partner organisations FAPESP, in the state of São Paulo, and FAPEMIG, in the state of Minas Gerais, on the basis of bilateral cooperation agreements.
Joint German-Brazilian funding proposals to establish international collaborations, as well as for research grants, may be submitted at any time and in any field. There are no specific calls for proposals or set deadlines for submission. Instead, proposals may be submitted at any time of year. German and Brazilian applicants must submit proposals in line with the current guidelines of the DFG, FAPESP and/or FAPEMIG.
In Brazil, only researchers based in the state of São Paulo are eligible to apply to FAPESP for funding. However, projects may have a thematic focus outside São Paulo. Joint proposals for research grants are subject to the rules for DFG/FAPESP Research Grants.
In Brazil, only researchers based in the state of Minas Gerais are eligible to apply to FAPEMIG for funding. However, projects may have a thematic focus outside Minas Gerais. Researchers should contact the DFG office in São Paulo before submitting a proposal.
Enquiries regarding applications for other funding programmes, such as Research Units and International Research Training Groups, must be submitted separately. This also applies to trilateral cooperations between the DFG, FAPESP and FAPEMIG.
Proposals are usually evaluated separately in Germany and Brazil in accordance with the review guidelines applicable in each country. Final decisions on research proposals are made jointly. Funding is only offered for proposals recommended for approval in both countries.
No special funds are made available by the DFG, FAPESP or FAPEMIG for the purposes of the cooperation. Instead, funding comes from the organisations' regular funding budgets. Each organisation bears the costs for the relevant country.
