The conservation of the natural environment and natural ressources can not only be understood as a matter of research and teaching at a university with over 35,000 students and about 200 institute buildings. The Energy and Environment Unit has the task to ensure this commitment and therefore offers corresponding services of coordination and consultancy.

The unit's essential base of operations results from the Freie Universität's environmental management system (which is certified according to the international standard DIN EN ISO 14001) as well as corresponding legal regulations. The unit is assigned to the head of the engineering division as a staff section. The responsibilities and procedures are documented in an environmental management handbook.

The unit is divided into three subdomains:

The maintenance and further development of the environemtal management system are comprehensive tasks of the Energy and Environment Unit at the Freie Universität Berlin. Energy management plays a key role, because of the significant environmental impacts and costs resulting from energy use. In this field, the focus is set on the initiation of annual energy efficiency programs, the controlling of consumption and the introduction and support of a bonus scheme for energy savings.

The focal points of waste management are the operational disposal of hazardous waste and bulky waste as well as the ongoing montioring and optimisation of waste avoidance, waste recycling and waste disposal.
