Dr. Ulrich Struck Appointed Unbudgeted Professor of Isotope Paleontology at Freie Universität / First chair in this field in Germany

Professor Dr. Ulrich Struck, head of stable isotope facilities at the Museum of Natural History in Berlin and associate paleontologist at Freie Universität, was appointed an unbudgeted professor of isotope paleontology at Freie Universität. "This professorship is one of its kind in Germany," said Professor Dr. Frank Riedel, who headed the selection committee.
The professorship strengthens the already close relationship between Freie Universität and the Berlin Museum of Natural History, which is a very important location for student internships and paleobiological research. The appointment of Professor Ulrich Struck at Freie Universität Berlin is also intended to strengthen the field of paleontology in research and teaching at the university.
"The analysis of stable isotope ratios in the geosphere and biosphere is an established field of research within the Earth sciences. It is important for gaining insights into paleotemperatures and paleobioproductivity," said Ulrich Struck. The work is predominantly carried out in the area of geochemistry. During the past two decades there has been a great increase in the research aspects of fossil remains of organisms, accompanied by constantly improving technical possibilities. Innovative applications have emerged at the intersection of disciplines, including paleonutrition.
Ulrich Struck, who was born in 1961, studied geology at the University of Kiel in Germany, where he earned his doctorate in micropalaeontology in 1992. He completed his habilitation on nitrogen isotopes in 2008 at Ludwig Maximillian’s Universität (LMU) Munich. During his scientific career he did research and taught at the universities in Kiel, Rostock-Warnemünde, Bremen, and Tübingen. From 2002 to 2006 he was head of the isotope laboratory of the Bavarian State Collection of Paleontology and from 2003 to 2006 the scientific secretary of the GeoBio Center at LMU Munich. Since 2006 he has been head of the isotope laboratory of the Museum of Natural History of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Since July 2008 he has also been a lecturer at the Department of Earth Sciences at Freie Universität Berlin.
