Three Lecture Series Beginning in October as Part of the Open Lecture Halls at Freie Universität

The Open Lecture Halls at Freie Universität Berlin will present three public university lecture series during the 2017/18 fall/winter. Each week recognized scholars and scientists from Germany and abroad will give presentations relating to computer science and sociology, ancient studies, and Japanese studies. All of the lectures are open to the public. Admission is free, and no registraion is required.

The first lecture on October 18, 2017, will be from the series "Open Technologies for an Open Society." This series is being organized jointly by the Institute of Computer Science at Freie Universität and Wikimedia Germany. During the following week, the series on identity („Identität“ – Probleme eines Konzepts und seine Entstehungsgeschichte) will start on October 24, 2017. Finally, on October 26, 2017, the series on Asian cuisine around the world (Der Globalisierte Gaumen: Ostasiens Küchen auf Reisen), organized by the Institute of Japanese Studies, will begin.   • To start the lecture series, Prof. Dr. Claudia Müller-Birn, Institute of Computer Science, Freie Universität Berlin, and Dr. Dominik Scholl, Wikimedia Germany e. V., will introduce the topic.

„Identität“ – Probleme eines Konzepts und seine Entstehungsgeschichte

  • Tuesdays, 6:15 - 8 p.m.; first lecture: October 24, 2017.
  • Conception: Prof. Dr. Reinhard Bernbeck, Dr. Philipp von Rummel, and Stefan Schreiber, Excellence Cluster Topoi. The Formation and Transformation of Space and Knowledge in Ancient Civilizations and Berliner Antike-Kolleg.
  • The first lecture will be given in German by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Straub, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, as an introduction to the general theme of personal and collective identity.

Der globalisierte Gaumen: Ostasiens Küchen auf Reisen

  • Thursdays, 4:15 - 6:00 p.m.; First lecture: October 26, 2017.
  • Conception: Prof. Dr. Irmela Hijiya-Kirschnereit and Prof. Dr. Cornelia Reiher, Institute of Japanese Studies, and Prof. Dr. Eun-Jeung Lee, Institute of Korean Studies, Freie Universität Berlin.
  • The first lecture entitled "Everybody’s darling: Die Globalisierung der Thai-Küche" will be held by anthropologist Prof. Dr. Marin Trenk, Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main.
