Prof. Dr. Ignacio Czeguhn Appointed Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Granada, Spain

Dr. Ignacio Czeguhn, a professor of law at Freie Universität Berlin, has been elected an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Granada, Spain. The appointment was made in recognition of his research on the history of European high courts and Spanish legal history. The official appointment will take place during the 2016/2017 winter semester as part of an academic ceremony in the ballroom of the Academy.

The Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Granada was founded in 1772 and is a member of the Spanish Academy Union. It has its headquarters in Granada and maintains a publicly accessible library for researchers.

Ignacio Czeguhn, who was born in 1966, studied law at the University of Würzburg. He then worked as a researcher at the Institute of Civil Law and Commercial Law at the University of Würzburg, and beginning in 1997 he was an academic assistant at the Chair of Civil Law, European Legal History, and Civil Litigation in Würzburg, where he also headed a language course on Spanish Legal Law. Czeguhn earned his doctorate in 2001 from the Faculty of Law at the University of Würzburg. For his doctoral thesis on "The Castilian Maximum Jurisdiction, 1250 to 1520" he was awarded the Prize of the United Scholarship and Award Foundation of the University of Würzburg. Since 2004 he has been working as a lecturer at the University of Granada. In 2006 he completed the habilitation process in civil law, German and European legal and constitutional history, and comparative legal history at the University of Würzburg. He then worked as a substitute professor at the University of Constance and Freie Universität Berlin. In 2009 he was appointed a professor of law specializing in civil law, German and European legal and constitutional history, and comparative legal history at Freie Universität. Since 2012 he has been a principal investigator in the TOPOI Cluster of Excellence, where he investigates rulings of Islamic water courts from the 9th to the 11th centuries. His research focuses on the history of European high courts, judicial history, and family and inheritance law.
