Economic Systems, Markets, and Institutions: Germany and Russia in Comparison

Institute for East European Studies of Freie Universität Coordinating Volkswagen Summer School in Berlin, September 29 to October 10, 2015 / Applications Being Accepted until July 20

A cross-institutional summer school to be held from September 27 to October 10 will focus on a comparison of economic systems and institutions in Germany and Russia. It is being coordinated by the Institute for East European Studies (OEI) of Freie Universität. The event is aimed at PhD students and junior researchers in the fields of sociology, political science, economics, social anthropology, law, history, and geography. It is open to applicants from countries inside and outside the European Union.

OEI’s cooperation partners in holding the summer school are the Hertie School of Governance, the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), the Higher School of Economics Moscow, and the European University at St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg State University. Entitled "Governance, Markets, and Institutions: Russia and Germany Compared," the summer school is being sponsored by the Volkswagen Foundation and is free for the participants. The conference language is English. The accommodation will be booked by Freie Universität and is free for the participants. Travel expenses may be reimbursed in part. Applications are being accepted until July 20.

The interdisciplinary program will address corporate social responsibility in Russia and Germany, the role of culture in economic development, labor standards, and the informal economy. The aim of the summer school is to promote an international network of researchers and experts who focus on German-Russian comparison.

The application must be submitted in English. It should include a letter of motivation, a CV, the most recent academic grades, and a summary of the candidate's doctoral thesis or proposal for the thesis. A master's degree is required. All of the documents need to be submitted by email as a PDF attachment to the coordinator of the program, Theocharis Grigoriadis, theocharis.grigoriadis@fu-berlin.de.
