Conference on Contemporary Brazilian Literature to Be Held March 11 and 12 at the Ibero-American Institute in Cooperation with the Latin American Institute of Freie Universität

№ 33/2013 from Mar 01, 2013

The contemporary literature of Brazil is the focus of an interdisciplinary conference to be held March 11 and 12, 2013, at the Ibero-American Institute. Literary and cultural scholars from Europe and Brazil will meet to discuss the impact on literary trends of social and political changes in Brazil since the end of military dictatorship. They will also look at new forms of artistic expression. The conference "Brasilianische Literatur der Gegenwart – Räume kultureller Übersetzungen und medialer Vermittlungen / Colóquio Internacional sobre Literatura Brasileira Contemporânea" is being organized in cooperation with the three universities, Universidade de Brasília, Université de Paris-Sorbonne, and Freie Universität Berlin. The workshop is being held in advance of the Frankfurt Book Fair 2013, where Brazil will be featured as the guest of honor. Before the two meeting dates in Berlin, there will be a two-day conference in Paris at the Sorbonne on March 7 and 8. All of the talks and discussions will be held in Portuguese.

Brazilian authors have increasingly been dealing with the time period after democratization started in 1985. They have started to incorporate new social moods in diverse texts, adopt devices used in other forms of art, and reflect on their relationship with the mass media. At the conference literary scholars will select certain current social and political trends and examine their impact on contemporary literature in Brazil. The conception and particular themes to be discussed developed out of an intensive exchange between experts in contemporary Brazilian literature working at the three participating universities. The conference is being organized by the division dealing with the literatures and cultures of Latin America and the Brazil Research Center, both based at the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität.
