Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin Call for Applications for ProFiL Program

Berlin Universities Provide Targeted Support for Women Scholars and Scientists

№ 7/2013 from Jan 14, 2013

With their jointly organized ProFiL program, the three major universities in Berlin engage very successfully in providing targeted support for outstanding women scholars and scientists at an early stage of their career. This leads to both excellence and gender equality in research. From September 2013 to October 2014, another group of 36 highly qualified women scholars will be supported in their pursuit of a full professorship. Through mentoring, offering seminars on issues of specific interest to scholars and scientists, and strategic networking, the ProFiL program supports the development of the participants in advancing their careers, preparing them for the demands associated with a professorship in the context of new forms of higher education management. A recent interim review of the program is available at

Women who have a habilitation or are working on a habilitation or who are junior professors, junior research group leaders, or postdoctoral researchers at one of the three participating universities (excluding Charité, which has its own program) as well as women researchers at the Social Science Research Center Berlin are welcome to submit applications.

The ProFiL program has an integrated approach. It focuses, on the one hand, on the individual career development of the researchers. On the other hand, it also takes into account the challenges of human resource development resulting from increased competition and the new forms of higher education governance. Experienced mentors advise the participants in career planning and share their knowledge about the structures, processes, and rules in academia. In accompanying seminars the participants prepare for the appointments procedure, develop their leadership skills, and expand their knowledge of new forms of higher education management and the acquisition of third-party funds. The ProFiL network supports exchange among the participants and supports dialogue with leaders in academia, government, and other relevant areas.

Each participant is requested to contribute 250 euros toward the costs. The application deadline is:  February 25, 2013.

Three information sessions will be held in January:
