On October 27, 2012, the German Foreign Office is opening a German House for Research and Innovation (GHRI) in New Delhi, India. Freie Universität Berlin is involved as a member, and in the future the university’s Liaison Office will be located there. Two of Freie Universität’s Liaison Offices are already located in GHRIs, one in New York and one in São Paulo. Freie Universität is a partner institution of the GHRI in Moscow and will also be involved in the German Research Center being set up in Cairo.

Since 2009, the German Federal Foreign Office in cooperation with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the alliance of German science organizations, and the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce has been setting up German Houses for Research and Innovation in various locations around the world. So far there are five of them. The various GHRIs are part of the German government's Strategy for the Internationalization of Science and Research. They present Germany as a land of research and innovation, and work to enhance international exchange and dialogue. Freie Universität Berlin's Liaison Office in New York has been in the GHRI there since 2010 and the one in São Paulo since February 2012.

The international network of Freie Universität encompasses seven liaison offices around the world. They are located in Beijing, Brussels, Cairo, Moscow, New Delhi, New York, and São Paulo. Their aim is to strengthen international cooperation and networks. Freie Universität Berlin's international network strategy won funding in the German government's Excellence Initiative in 2007 and 2012.
