"Making Academic Careers More Attractive"

Current Reform Proposals and Their Potential for Political Equality

№ 176/2012 from Jun 25, 2012

In the past few years there have been intense discussions about the training conditions and future prospects for young academics. One important issue in this context was how the structural deficits and the working and professional cultures impact career choices and career development, especially with regard to women. Meanwhile, far-reaching reform proposals, which would provide for a restructuring of career paths and personnel structures in higher education and research, were submitted to the German parliament. Some salient features include the rebalancing of the relationship between temporary and permanent jobs and the introduction of assistant and associate professorships in connection with tenure-track models. The aim is to clarify the prospects for a tenured position at an earlier stage in the individual’s career and to improve the conditions for reconciling an academic career with family life.

In 2004 Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin initiated the program "ProFiL. Professionalization of Women in Research and Teaching: Mentoring – Training – Networking" and since then have been working successfully together to promote young researchers with regard to excellence and gender equality. So far through this program 124 women have been appointed to W3/W2 professorship positions and 33 others to junior professorships. The presidents of the three Berlin universities have issued an invitation to the kick-off event of the 9th ProFiL round:
