Tenth Start of Adopt a Vortex

Institute of Meteorology of Freie Universität Berlin Awards Weather Sponsorships as of September 28, 00:00 (GMT+2)

№ 298/2011 from Sep 26, 2011

The meteorologists of Freie Universität Berlin will continue their program of Adopt a Vortex into 2012. For further details, see www.met.fu-berlin.de/adopt-a-vortex/. Since 1954, the meteorologists of the “Berliner Wetterkarte” at the Institute of Meteorology of Freie Universität Berlin have been naming highs and lows that influence central European weather. High pressure systems in 2012 will have male names and low pressure systems female names – prices are: €299 for highs and €199 for lows.

With Adopt a Vortex everybody is able to participate in the naming process. Adopting a vortex means contributing to the continuation of the comprehensive weather and climate observation that is carried out at the Institute of Meteorology of Freie Universität Berlin. The weather observation in Berlin-Dahlem has been supported by this campaign since 2002. The program has been so successful up to now that the objective of continuing weather observation by students at one of the world’s largest meteorological surveys was achieved once again this year.

Sponsorship of a pressure system makes an extraordinary gift for Christmas, birthdays, or other special occasions. It is also used by a number of our sponsors to increase the general awareness of their interesting, yet less common  first names. Or have you ever heard of the names Belice, Schwiedhard, or Sükrü? Over 1700 participants from 15 European countries plus Brazil, Japan, and the United States have already been welcomed as sponsors.

Much of the media uses the names of the vortices in its weather reports. The students and staff of the institute hope that this will continue in the future, as funding for continued weather observation can only be guaranteed with active participation by the public and the media.
