№ 294/2011 from Sep 20, 2011
A one-day conference dealing with the perspectives and the organization of interdisciplinary research projects at universities will be held on October 10 at Freie Universität Berlin. The conference theme is “Exploring Difference – Transdisciplinary research and its institutional impact at higher education institutions.” Participants from Australia, Great Britain, North America, and Europe will debate their experiences with theme-based research. The conference language is English. There is no charge for participation and the conference will be open to the public. Advance registration is requested.
Complex global issues and the resulting transdisciplinary research approaches raise new challenges for the organization of research and communication among the participating disciplines, with the German Excellence Initiative being a notable example of a call for funding proposals for transdisciplinary research projects. This development has implications for the organizational structure of universities as well as for research funding and the career development of young researchers.
The conference is the eighth one in the International Dialogue on Education (ID-E Berlin) Berlin series. The ID-E Berlin series was started in 2007 as a joint initiative of the British Council, the German Academic Exchange Service, the German-American Fulbright Commission, the Group of Eight Australia, and the Embassy of Canada. This is the first time that a university is one of the organizers and host.
