Between Ideals and the Marketplace – Chinese Literature since 1980

Following this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair, with China as guest of honor, the Confucius Institute at Freie Universität Berlin is hosting a workshop on October 24, 2009. The workshop theme is: Between Ideals and the Marketplace – Chinese Literature since 1980. The workshop will focus on new trends in Chinese urban women’s literature and on current practice and challenges in translation. Another issue will be the marketing of recent Chinese literature in German-speaking countries. The workshop will be led by the sinologist, literary scholar, translator, and editor, Professor Eva Müller. There is no charge for participation.

The speakers at the workshop will include the scholar of literature and cultural studies, Professor Dai Jinhua of Peking University. She will give a lecture on "Desires in the City: Gender-specific Writing – Status Quo and Desiderata" in Chinese. Eva Müller's lecture (in German) will be on "Women and Family in Contemporary Literature." Prof. em. Ulrich Kautz will deal with the requirements for successful literary translation in his lecture entitled "Deutsche Sinologen als Literaturübersetzer."  Alice Grünfelder's lecture will shed light on German publishers' selection criteria for Chinese literature.
