The extraction of natural resources by multinational companies often has negative consequences, especially at the local level. Researches have begun exploring the different ways that governments, companies, and communities are adressing these effects. Mobilization of local communities and associated social movements, involvement by national and international NGOs, and the responses of governments are the focus of the discussion.
In this fourth event of the joint speaker series of Freie Universität Berlin and Indiana University, Jessica Steinberg, Assistant Professor at Indiana University and Bettina Engels, Associate Professor at Freie Universität Berlin, will discuss their research on this topic, with a regional focus on African extractive regions.
