How long have you been at Freie Universität?
I came to Berlin in July, and I will stay at Freie Universität for two semesters.
Did you come through direct exchange or another program?
I am here through the Brazilian-German program “Ciência Sem Fronteiras.”
What are you studying?
I’m enrolled in physics at my home university and at Freie Universität.
Where are you from, and where do you study at home?
I am from Brazil, originally from Rio de Janeiro, but I study in São Paulo at Universidade Estadual de Campinas.
Why did you choose Freie Universität?
I was interested in coming to Germany ever since I first started studying physics. My areas of interest lie in the theory of relativity and quantum theory. Freie Universität has a lot to offer in this field, and there are several renowned professors teaching here.
What do you especially like about Freie Universität?
In my field of studies the courses are very demanding. To not lose track and keep a check on how you are keeping up with the material, you have to continuously do exercises. I appreciate this kind of teaching method.
Is there anything special that Freie Universität offers for international students?
There is a broad offering of courses for international students at Freie Universität. In the beginning I took an intensive German course. But unfortunately I haven’t had the time yet to take advantage of other courses, as I am very busy with my physics studies.
What did you like less?
There is a lot of bureaucracy, but actually it is the same in Brazil.
Do you have any suggestions for someone new at Freie Universität?
The requirements differ from subject to subject. So before coming here, be aware of the demands.
Any suggestions for living in Berlin?
Berlin became my second home. The city has so much to offer in the way of culture and leisure activities. Exploring the city is very easy because of the good public transportation system. I would suggest living at the student dormitories or in a shared flat to meet other students.
