A number of services, such as the use of classrooms, an extensive program of IT classes, the provision of software at a reduced rate, and a hotline, are available to all members of Freie Universität without requiring special registration with ZEDAT.
Other services, such as WLAN, the use of dial-up access to the campus network via modem and ISDN, or the use of the communication and e-mail servers as well as other servers (compute servers, etc.), require registration as a ZEDAT user with a password-protected account.
The potential user must complete an application for a password-protected account (user authorization), providing a user name that clearly identifies the individual (user ID). This user name and password are necessary to obtain any services requiring registration.
Upon enrollment at Freie Universität Berlin, all students receive a letter informing them of how to activate their ZEDAT account. They are given an opportunity to select an e-mail address in the form: email@example.com. In addition, they are given an e-mail address in the form: firstname.lastname@example.org
