The Department of Education at Freie Universität Berlin takes a broad-based approach, encompassing 19 divisions. Research foci include the anthropology of education, pioneering research in the field, empirical research on education, schooling, and classroom instruction, school development research, and intercultural education studies.
The European Master in Intercultural Education and the European Master in Children’s Rights focus on intercultural education and global children's rights.
Teaching and research are carried out in close collaboration with practitioners. For example, The Nightingale Project, a mentoring program to support schoolchildren with migration background, was developed at the Division of Primary Education. Working on a one-to-one basis, it helps break down barriers to education and also establishes mutual understanding.
