30.05.2016 | 18:00 - 20:00

Professor Dr. Daho Djerbal

Public Event in the framework of the DAAD Dialogue Project: Dialogue and Asymmetries: Debating Development, Memory and Migration

This talk will shed light on the post – colonial trajectories of development in past and present Algeria. Djerbal will argue that there are three fundamental issues for understanding theories and practices of Algeria’s post-colonial development: State, industrialization and rent economy. He will not only highlight the economic challenges inherited from colonialism and dominant paradigms, but also the pernicious effects of oil revenues on the practices of state and society.

  • Prof. Dr. Daho Djerbal is Professor of Modern History at the University of Algiers-Bouzareah. He is the editor of Naqd, Revue d’études et de critique sociale.
  • Chair: Prof. Dr. Cilja Harders, Director of the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Politics , FU Berlin
